Roleplaying in MMORPGs?

Is it possible? Should it be done? Share your opinions and experiences.

Re: Roleplaying in MMORPGs?

Don't this so, expecially because any MMorpg lack the possibility to gewt out of the schemes that any standard live-game has. MMORPG are almost and endless line of endless dungeon where "player" increase their powers......... but still many consider this a RPG.

Don't think there's a possibility of prpper RPG'ing in computer games. Doubt there will be untill there's a decent AI ^_^

Re: Roleplaying in MMORPGs?

I don't think it is an AI matter..... should this happen we could evn argue on a MMORPG on the Star Trek's Holodeck style.......... that would be real RPG

Re: Roleplaying in MMORPGs?

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, I say roleplaying can only be done in multi-player games. Against the computer, no amount of character development and randomly generated quests can substitute for a though-out personalised experience. Whereas even in a hack-and-slash rpg, it is at least possible to do some small amount of actual roleplaying if all players are amenable to the idea, and have a little imagination.

Cheers!

Re: Roleplaying in MMORPGs?

Ok, I'll try to remember what I wrote before. The answer that didn't post was of course far superior compared to this and would have won me many prizes etc... ^^

I say roleplaying is possible in MMORPGs with certain type of players (namely, good ones ^^). In many campaings one of the best things is interaction between player characters, their social relationships etc. That part can be included in to a rpg played with the help of computers. The story itself (if there is a plot or somesuch) will of course be more limited in a computer game, unless the players make it up themselves.

All in all, online-gaming can offer something like roleplaying, when "real thing" is not available ^^

For some reason the forum has been painstakingly slow for me today. Hope it finally posted.

Also noticed it had same points I already mentioned in "Anarchy Online (free)" thread.

Re: Roleplaying in MMORPGs?

Sorry to disagree with you, MKUN, but I really consider hard to have Role-Play in a MMRPG, almost because PC are strictly forced to do "What the DM have programed to" and can't get out of the lines. I.e. DM states that aPC have to talk with NPC 1 but the PC allows you to have a fixed dialogue, and doesn't accomply the possibility that PC can offend, lie, or anything else......
Same if they decide to go on the other side, what happens if they decide to leave their quest and point North searching for new and most intresting adventures ?
