| Administrator | I want to play GTA 4: Should I buy a console?
Normally I don't like consoles, and don't like console games, but some people suggest: GTA 4 might be exclusive to consoles. To be honest, I would be surprised if there wouldn't be PC release, since the reasons named by people who think there won't be one doesn't seem to be strong enough. If you name the scandal with hot coffee mod, you have to understand: The scandal was born because Rockstar decided to keep some scenes in the package, only disabled, even if they knew what will come out. Were they stupid? They trying to punish their fanbase for it? When making the PC version wouldn't be too expensive (and it isn't an exclusive title) and it would mean more sales an income they would go agains their own interests? I somehow doubt it, and I doubt it for one and only reason: GTA is about the american dream, the american culture, it is a "twisted reflection" of it, but it is still a reflection. It speaks about a society. A society where it is normal to see people shoot each other and make that a way of progress. Where you can make deals with the prostitutes, run your own prostitution racket without people complaining about. Your children can know what is happening, they can see most of the junk in the TV and you don't have to care. Where minors can be convicted as adults but the parrents aren't responsible... But the moment where you can see "tits" or anything that looks dangerous. By the time the scandal exploded the majority of revenue were safe, the game was sold in many copies in the first few days and weeks, and they were safe, and suddenly the scandal errupted and they sold even more copies of the game, and with this, even more people got the message. GTA is more than an action game, and it beats driver, carmageddon, etc. mostly because it is a twisted reflection of some culture, some values, it lets us have fun and laugh at others and ourselves. The relatiopnship between players and the game is different from what we see with other games. Would you think Rockstar is going to turn its back to all this, and make a game just like any other you can see on the shelves? I doubt it. And if it is a GTA it should be there for PC as well. Why? Because it isn't only for the good consumers who buy everything based on marketing and exclusive titles, such good consumers wouldn't let GTA to be what it is now, and what it aims to be. Some point to piracy. I think it is something that doesn't have mush effect on GTA Series. Why? Currently we seen an interesting research about a different topic: Game demos. An interesting enough their effect is very similar to effects of piracy. Why? Becaue people do buy the games they like but if they can try: They won't buy the weak games, they won't buy a game if its demo was enough of it. And GTA is a good game, a very good game, with a solid fanbase, who WILL buy the game. Even if GTA is the only game they buy. It is a very good value for your money. But on the other hand: Would I buy an XBOX 360 for GTA alone? Probably. But maybe I would buy for the exclusive content too. Would I stop my boycott against Sony and buy a PS3 for a GTA game if it would be exclusive? GTA shouldn't be that exclusive but if it is solid and I can try it first I would even think about it. Why? Because from what I seen with GTA: San Andreas: The amoun of content you can see and hear in the game is amazing, if I would buy a few CDs worth of music, would buy some mini games comparable to what is in the game, and buy standard action games that would last as long (story wise) as GTA, I would spend more than buying GTA and a console combined. And it is the first reason for any possible console only relase, if the makers of the console pays enough for it. |
