"Sane levels"

I seen some level 150 druid, and ask: What levels are sane, what should be accepted in a world? To me even 30-40 or so levels are high enough to ask: Is there any need for more. To me there isn't. What do you think about Epic levels? What level is the highest limit you would like to see in the game?

Re: "Sane levels"

Well, I voted 30. That's the maximum that I would accept in a campaign that I'd DM.
I could play a game session in a higher level, but that would be only for fun (not anything serious).

Epic levels are insane. Just look at the epic DC of diplomacy. Everyone can be your friend (you find that big demon almost attacking you, then suddenly, he's your friend). Or the epic DC of autohypnosis (you can retry a saving throw even if it doesn't allow it, but it must be a mind-affecting one).
Of course you can have a great time playing an epic campaign, but you must have a reasonable DM.

So if you go way beyond the 20th level, things will get out of hand. And I think that this level is around the 30th, but YMMV

Re: "Sane levels"

I voted for 50 for one reason: Many traditional racial training path are represented by two base and a prestige classes: Having access to the full powers of such paths looks like a sane limit one can enforce. Any lower level can hurt these characters and they are important elements of the setting. But I have no Epic level experience

Re: "Sane levels"

I voted for Any level, as long as it matches the story. This is since most of the time the story evolves with the characters... so i find those two to be closely related.

TheElf has a good point, and Greater Gods are usually represented by avatars of about 50 levels... when you get beyond that power level the game has long lost any small sanity it might have had :P

I haven't dared yet to play epic characters... yet.

Re: "Sane levels"

I feel that the highest 'sane' level of a character is totally dependant of the story. It makes sense to be level 75 if you're travelling to new and previously undiscovered planes where the gods have been forsaken and forgotten, and there are no civilizations, only wildlife. It does NOT make sense to be level 75 if you're just piddling around on toria, killing gods...

Re: "Sane levels"

It shouldn't matter if a campaign has very high level PCs as long as the setting is challenging enough for the players to adventure in.

Re: "Sane levels"

To level 20... But what about level 120?

I think a character shouldn't stick out too much from other heroes / mythical heroes of the land... If you cannot place a villain against him that is a challange for the PC but cannot destroy massive parts of your setting, then you can ask: Why that villain haven't destroyed this or that. And with this you can question how can you have a setting around the character... This can be a problem.

Re: "Sane levels"

it depends on the setting and the game

when the gamesystem is designed for LVL 1 to 10, 15 might get tricky, if the system is designed for 100 LVLs then 15 is just a bit above total n00b
