| What happens when you do multiclass?
Lets see it, in a bit more detailed way. First, your character should learn the new class somewhere, so you should search for a mentor, who can teach you. But that mentor asks for some fee, and even worse, he tries to make a good name, and for this reason looks for the best students. You are old, you aren't loyal to your old mentor, so he can ask, if you will be loyal? How he the mentor of academia will feel, when other magicians point out, his old student started picking the locks? Can he tell, that student were a warrior before? And you want to practice your old ways as well. As an older person you don't learn quickly, he would have to deal with old reflexes that are good for another class, but not for his students, would stick out from the class, which would hurt everyone, so more likely than not, he won't accept you. And even if he will, you will spend time relearning many old things, and spend about 8-16 years in school again. In this time you lose fame, companions, less people will remember your deeds, your equipment gets rusty and outdated, etc. So you lose a lot.
The rules doesn't give you exact results, but they say you should roleplay what happens with your character in the game setting, and when you do roleplay it, you have to face these results. How other students will react to you, and what other people will think about an adult who does excercises designed for 6 years old kids. And how your new schools wants to ensure you stay loyal? Should I tell you more? Try to roleplay it, and see how multiclassing in d20 works.
