Do you use miniatures?

I think they can be good sometimes, but you cannot prepare a tactical map for all encounters, and your chances are even worse if you have unplanned encounters, because your players surprise you. I think in such cases, using minuature specific rules, and miniatures isn't the wisest thing to do, how do you handle this situation?

sometimes i print out some maps scale 1 inch on the printed map = 5 feet in the game, works petty good

normaly we use a battlemat from chessex, those thingies are great with a non-perm marker (same link, buttom of the page), don´t use the red one (or any marker which includes red (as brown, orange, etc)) on the mats they leave shadows behind

if your players surprise u with tactics, great !!!

(DM/GMs can learn

I don't like the battlemat idea. But I would have other alternatives, yet I prefer not to use miniatures.

Re: Do you use miniatures?

I can't vote in the poll. The correct answer is "Only when playing D&D".

Voted : I don't play D&D

But

We use random items as teh players sometimes

They saw a giant ( from distance ) , didn't seem too impressed.

So i took a d6
'this is you'

took a coke can
'this is it'

They decided that attack wasn't an option.

Nope, never really have honestly. Just started with 3rd ed. Been gaming since the late 70s without 'em.
