What is the difference between a longsword and the longsword used by Xulas the Saviour of Derenshire against the orcish hordes. If you only check the rulebooks they are both simple longswords. But the later sword is unique, not because of some stat, but because of its history. Maybe the sword also earned a "name" in the hands of its owner, lets call it bloodrazor. But it doesn't change the fact: It is still a longsword. Nothing magical, no "masterwork items", no unusual materials, just some history and a fancy name. Later Xulas will fight against ogres of the north, and becomes the Hero of Arvellan. What happens to Bloodrazor?

Warning! Contents of this article might be fairly trivial for some readers. In fact I hope it will be trivial for most of you. Why? Even the best system is useless if you can't find a party to play with. Stores where you can play the game, conventions, clubs can be very important if you want to find players to play with. Sadly some of these places are threatened. And if they are threatened some players might lose their chances to find a party to play with.

The Colony is a TV show about survival in a post-acopalypse setting. You might see some interesting ideas in the show, but as an RPG player or DM you won't buy it. Why? Because after a viral outbreak, if you survive (now immune to the virus) you will face many problems but lack of resources won't be one of them. Why? Because cars don't vanish when their owners die. If in a huge city only a few people survives gasoline, cars, etc. won't be a problem. So things wouldn't work like they did in the TV show. But how would you turn a such event into a good adventure?

You heard? Wizards of the Coast said with D&D Essentials they plan to get both new players, current D&D players and people who stoped playing D&D. They claim they listened to feedback. And I think they did. Why? Mostly because D&D Essentials line will start with a friendly red box. But some people said listeining to players is counterproductive and point to many MMO games where the developer just did that and it turned into a disaster. Others can point to developers who didn't listen and how it ended up in a disaster.

World of Darkness is one of the most popular roleplaying games. When fans of World of Darkness heard generic WoD books will be produced as PDF and Print on Demand products only, that was the first alarming news. Yet, most of the doomsaying died down, since Print on Demand isn't a bad things. After all who stops a local bookstore from ordering books if they are sure: their clients will buy them. At least it was the conclusion. But now the doomsayers speak about how White Wolf closed down the entire Mage product line with an afterword in a book without warning. And I think this time the doomsaying won't stop so easily.

Some recent discussions about D&D Essentials led me to write an article about how some would advertise the game. Of course I don't want to discuss the best ideas, since the worst ones are far more entertaining. I think you will love some of the ideas, since they are interesting to say the least. Ohh, and they can tell you a few things about D&D, even if you wouldn't like to see it from this perspective.

In many D&D games you have a series of combat encounters a few puzzles and some skill challenges. The game balance in such campaigns is nice if most of the characters are designed to be efficient in tactical situations, have some attack and defensive powers. But the moment when you run a game where your characters won't fight much, a lot of powers will become useless. After all if you aren't fighting monsters, but talking with some nobles then swining your sword won't help you much.

At the official Wizards forum we talked about implementing some character ideas, and it brought up a new topic: How some character typoes work in a party? Why would the party bring someone with them who isn't good in combat. I think there are pretty good reasons. If I would only speak in terms of 4E system, I would say: Skill challenges can be important. They can lead to smaller or bigger goals in the adventure, and with this they can help the party to earn XP. Of course there is a more complex version of the story.

Some fans of 4th edition asked me to post some ideas I see as impossible to implement in 4th edition. I think the list could be pretty long if I would take their "everything is possible concept" seriously and would list all fantasy characters that can be playable in an RPG and doesn't work in 4th edition. But it would be highly unfair, since while some witch is possible to create in M.A.G.U.S. (a hungarian game) in D&D it isn't possible since it isn't part of the setting, and it isn't part of any incarnation of the setting either. So let see something that was built on (A)D&D Lore.

In D&D 3rd edition one of the goals was to limit total wealth of characters in an attempt to maintain game balance. The problem with this approach was simple: A 1st level aristocrat and a first level beggar had exactly the same total wealth. It was and still is pretty silly, but it doesn't end here. Why? Because players can buy and sell their belongings and properties so even the contents of your wardrobe were counted in this total wealth. Just as well as houses and everything else. But as you can guess there are other problems. The problem is: If D&D 4 wants to maintain game balance with controlling total wealth it faces the same choices.

Some players are worried because they think D&D Essentials will become D&D 4.5E. It is a separate product line, and Wizards probably won't stop publishing 4th edition books because of D&D Essentials, but there is something to consider. Normally core books for D&D are hardcover books since theyare designed to withstand wear and tear for years, if a book is paperback it is because Wizards thinks you won't use it that much. And Rules Compendium is a 320 pages long core book and people who play D&D Essentials might use it more often than you use PHB. Why? Because D&D Essentials seems to have a single core rulebook.
